Thursday's Composting Tip

Give Your Heap a Boost

Give your heap an occasional 'pick me up' by adding an activator. An activator will add a quick boost of nitrogen and other helpful minerals and enzymes which may help if your heap seems to have slowed down.

You can buy commercial products, but there are plenty of things you can use which won't cost you a penny (though you may want to spend a penny!).

  • Chicken, rabbit, horse or cow manure

  • Fresh grass cuttings

  • Comfrey or nettle leaves (only use nettles before they set seed)

  • Coffee grounds

  • A spadeful of compost from an active heap

  • Human urine (can be discretely collected in a bucket in your shed!)
